Fishing Basics
Fishing is one of the cheapest ways to put protein on the table and one of the best things you can do for your head. You can get started for under $50 in gear, a license costs less than a night out, and a stocked pond will produce dinner in under an hour. This skill covers everything from getting legal to filleting your catch — focused on food procurement and budget gear, not sport fishing Instagram content.

# Localization note — fishing regulations, species, and licensing vary by jurisdiction.
- Agent MUST look up local fishing regulations for user's area before giving advice.
- US: Each state has its own Fish & Wildlife or Game & Fish agency. Licenses are state-specific.
Most states offer online purchasing through their agency website.
- UK: Rod licence required from Environment Agency (gov.uk). Coarse and trout fishing
have different rules. Sea fishing generally does not require a licence.
- Australia: State-based recreational fishing licences (e.g., NSW DPI, VIC Fisheries).
Some states (SA, NT) do not require a licence for recreational fishing.
- Canada: Provincial licensing. Some provinces have separate freshwater/saltwater licences.
- Adapt species, bait, and seasonal info for user's region.
- Swap currency for gear cost estimates.
- Metric vs imperial for measurements (weights, distances).

LICENSE BASICS
- Cost: $15-30/year for residents (most states). Non-resident: $40-80.
- Where to buy: Your state's Fish & Wildlife website. Takes 5-10 minutes online.
- What you need: Driver's license or ID, payment method.
- Timing: Valid immediately on purchase. Most run Jan 1 - Dec 31.
- Kids: Most states offer free licenses under age 16.
- Extras: Some states require a trout stamp ($5-15) for trout fishing specifically.
- Free fishing days: Most states offer 1-2 days/year where no license is needed. Good for trying it out.
CODEBLOCK1
STARTER GEAR LIST
Essential ($30-40):
- Spinning rod and reel combo, 6-7 foot, medium power -- $25-35
(Zebco 33, Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 combo, or Daiwa D-Shock)
- Monofilament line 8-10 lb test (usually pre-spooled on combos)
- Hook assortment pack (size 6-2 for panfish/bass) -- $3-5
- Split shot sinkers (assorted) -- $2-3
- Snap-on bobbers (1-2 inch) -- $2-3
Strongly recommended ($10-15 more):
- Needle-nose pliers (for hook removal) -- $5
- Fillet knife (6 inch flexible blade) -- $8-12
- Small tackle box or bag -- $5-8
- Stringer or bucket (to keep fish alive) -- $3-5
Skip for now:
- Fish finder, waders, multiple rods, expensive lures, rod holders
- You can add gear as you learn what you actually need
CODEBLOCK2
IMPROVED CLINCH KNOT
1. Thread 6 inches of line through the hook eye.
2. Wrap the free end around the standing line 5 times.
3. Pass the free end through the small loop right above the hook eye.
4. Pass the free end through the big loop you just created.
5. Wet the knot with saliva (dry knots weaken from friction heat).
6. Pull the standing line to tighten. Trim the tag end to 1/8 inch.
Practice this 20 times at your kitchen table. You should be able to tie it
in under 30 seconds before you go fishing.
CODEBLOCK3
RIG 1: BOBBER RIG (Best starter rig. Use for panfish, bass, trout in still water.)
- Snap bobber on line, 2-4 feet above hook
- One split shot sinker 6 inches above hook
- Size 6-8 hook
- Bait: worm, corn kernel, or small piece of hot dog
- The bobber goes under when a fish bites. Set the hook.
RIG 2: BOTTOM RIG (For catfish, carp, bottom-feeders in rivers or lakes.)
- Egg sinker (1/2-1 oz) slides on main line
- Tie a swivel below the sinker
- 12-18 inch leader line from swivel to hook
- Size 2-1/0 hook
- Bait: cut bait, chicken liver, nightcrawlers
- Cast, let it sink, wait. You'll feel the bite in your rod tip.
RIG 3: SIMPLE LURE (For bass, trout, pike — active fishing.)
- Tie a small inline spinner (Rooster Tail, Mepps Aglia) directly to line
- Cast and retrieve at steady pace. Vary speed until you get bites.
- Cost: $3-5 per lure. Start with silver and gold in 1/8 oz.
RIG 4: LIVE BAIT FLOAT (For stocked trout in ponds.)
- Small slip bobber setup
- Size 8-10 hook
- Single nightcrawler threaded on hook (don't ball it up)
- Set depth 2-4 feet. Trout cruise at mid-depth.
CODEBLOCK4
WHERE TO FISH (RANKED BY BEGINNER SUCCESS)
1. Stocked ponds/lakes: State agencies stock trout, catfish, bass into public
waters on published schedules. Check your state's stocking report online.
Fish within 1-2 weeks of stocking for best results.
2. Community fishing programs: Many cities maintain small urban ponds stocked
specifically for easy access. Often have paved paths and no boat needed.
3. Public lake/river bank access: State parks, wildlife management areas,
Army Corps of Engineers lakes. Free or low-cost parking.
4. Farm ponds (with permission): If you know someone with land, ask. Many
landowners are happy to let someone fish their overstocked pond.
READING WATER — WHERE FISH ACTUALLY ARE
- Structure: Fallen trees, rock piles, docks, weed edges. Fish hide near structure.
- Shade: In warm weather, fish sit in shade. Fish the shady side.
- Current breaks: In rivers, fish rest behind rocks and in eddies — not in fast current.
- Depth transitions: Where shallow meets deep (drop-offs) concentrates fish.
- Dawn and dusk: Fish feed most actively in low light. Early morning is prime time.
- Wind: Fish the windblown bank. Wind pushes food (insects, baitfish) to that shore.
CODEBLOCK5
WHEN YOU GET A BITE
1. Feel the bite (bobber goes under, rod tip pulls down, line tightens).
2. Set the hook: Quick, firm upward wrist snap. Don't yank wildly.
3. Keep your rod tip up. Let the rod bend absorb the fight.
4. Reel steadily. Don't horse it in — let the drag do its job.
5. Bring fish to shore/bank. Grab behind the head (bass by the lower lip).
CATCH AND RELEASE (when required or chosen)
- Wet your hands before handling fish. Dry hands strip protective slime.
- Use barbless hooks (pinch the barb flat with pliers) for easy, fast release.
- Don't squeeze the fish. Support the belly.
- Keep the fish in water as much as possible. Photo? 10 seconds max out of water.
- Revive exhausted fish: Hold in water facing current until it swims away on its own.
CODEBLOCK6
BASIC FILLET TECHNIQUE
1. Lay fish on cutting board. Cut behind the head down to the spine (don't cut through).
2. Turn the blade flat along the spine. Slice toward the tail in one smooth stroke.
3. Flip the fillet skin-side down. Slide the knife between flesh and skin.
4. Repeat on the other side. Two boneless fillets from one fish.
5. Rinse fillets in cold water. Pat dry. Check for pin bones with fingers — pull any out.
SIMPLE PAN-FRY (works for any white-fleshed fish)
- Pat fillets dry with paper towel.
- Season both sides: salt, pepper, garlic powder.
- Heat 2 tbsp butter + 1 tbsp oil in skillet over medium-high.
- Cook 3-4 minutes per side (for 1/2 inch thick fillets) until golden and flakes with fork.
- Squeeze lemon over top. Eat immediately.
- Total time from cleaning to eating: 15-20 minutes.
CODEBLOCK7
REGULATIONS BASICS
- Bag limits: Maximum number of fish you can keep per day per species.
Typical: 5 bass, 25 panfish, 5 trout, 10 catfish. Varies by state and water body.
- Size limits: Minimum length to keep. Measured from nose to tail tip.
Typical: 12-14 inch minimum for bass, 7-9 inch for trout. Check local rules.
- Seasons: Some species have closed seasons (usually during spawning).
Trout: often closed Feb-April. Bass: varies. Panfish: usually open year-round.
- Slot limits: Some waters require you to RELEASE fish within a certain size range.
- Penalties: Keeping undersized/over-limit fish = fines of $50-500+ per fish.
SEASONAL FISH AVAILABILITY (GENERAL US)
- Spring: Trout (stocking season), crappie, bass (pre-spawn — hungry and aggressive)
- Summer: Catfish, bass (fish deep or early morning), panfish (bluegill, sunfish)
- Fall: Bass (feeding heavily pre-winter), trout (fall stocking), walleye
- Winter: Ice fishing regions — panfish, walleye, trout. Southern states — bass, catfish.

Daiwa D-Shock)
